ATR # 29: Ultima Lucha Awesomeness

This week on Around the Ring we discuss Lucha Underground’s season finale Ultima Lucha, why this show has been so good, the impact that it has had and will have on the wrestling business, and the What Culture article 10 Lessons WWE Could Learn from Lucha Underground; a really fun episode of ROH including The Young Bucks, AJ Styles, War Machine, Cedric Alexander, and an excellent main event segment that started with a match in “headlock city” between Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole with Christopher Daniels on commentary that quickly broke down and turned into a tag team match with a reunited Future Shock taking on The Addiction, highlighted by the continued slow-burn face turn by Adam Cole; more setting up for TakeOver: Brooklyn on NXT including a good match between Bayley and Charlotte, more great Bull Dempsey vignettes, a absolute travesty of justice with the announcement that The Vaudevillains would be challenging for the tag titles at TakeOver, our first look at Uhaa Nation in NXT and his new name Apollo Crews, and the reveal that Tyler Breeze’s opponent will be Jushin Thunder Liger; a descent episode of Raw filled with very nice Roddy Piper tributes (the best one coming from The Miz of all people); and finally a mini review of the new Frank Turner album Positive Songs for Negative People.

ATR # 28: Remembering Roddy Piper; Cesaro’s Rise

This week on Around the Ring we discuss the passing of wrestling legend Rowdy Roddy Piper, looking back at his career as one of the best talkers the industry has ever known; Cesaro’s rise to (nearly) main event status and the great crowd reactions he’s been receiving; a pretty entertaining Raw that included the destruction of John Cena’s nose; a fun episode of SmackDown with a main event that highlighted four wrestlers that should become a central core to the WWE’s main event picture going forward; WWE.com’s piece on who will be the next John Cena; a head scratching episode of NXT that potentially highlighted a change in direction for WWE where interviews and cameras are concerned; the Bleacher Report’s piece WWE NXT Prospects Destined Not to Make Main Roster; the six wrestlers I think NXT should sign next; part one of Ultima Lucha, including the best falls count anywhere match I have ever seen; and a great episode of ROH that included a really fun six men mayhem match, an excellent main event, and a raucous crowd with some great chants. I’d also planned on discussing Ronda Rousey’s victory at UFC 190 but it slipped my mind after touching on everything else (and having to hurry up twoards the end so I could get my daughter to a student council event on time). I’m really not a fan of UFC or MMA in general but I like Ronda Rousey and made sure to watch this fight. She is a machine in that octagon and even though it only last 34 seconds, I really enjoyed the fight (also the promo vignette for UFC 191 looked pretty cool, so I may have to check that out).

ATR # 25: Brock Lesnar Kills a Car; Titus O’Neil Owns JBL; Adam Cole Face Turn?

This week on Around the Ring we discuss a lackluster Raw that had three great segments to end the show: Brock Lesnar destroying a car, Titus O’Neil destroying JBL on commentary, and Cena/Cesaro 2; Battleground predictions; how the WWE is a great example of everything that is wrong with corporate America;  a mediocre NXT with Charlotte and Sasha Banks reuniting, Solomon Crowe looking beyond unimpressive, and The Vaudevillians becoming # 1 contenders for the NXT Tag Titles; a fun edition of ROH highlighted by the tease of an Adam Cole face turn; and a great episode of Lucha Underground along with updates on a season two.
